Blue Gold & Silken Tofu: A Day of Artisan Craft in Historic Sanxia
Escape the city for a day of hands-on creativity in Sanxia, one of Northern Taiwan’s most storied districts. Our "Sanxia Artisan Experience" invites you to slow down and rediscover the beauty of traditional crafts. From the rhythmic art of Indigo Dyeing to the delicate process of making Handmade Tofu, this 8-hour journey is a celebration of heritage, craftsmanship, and local soul.
Why This Tour is a Must-Do
Sanxia was once Northern Taiwan’s bustling center for dyeing and trade. Today, that legacy lives on through social enterprises like THE CAN (甘樂文創). On this tour, you don’t just watch—you participate. You will create your own "Blue Gold" textile and craft fresh tofu using ancient methods, all while exploring the stunning Baroque architecture of Sanxia Old Street.
Journey Highlights: What You’ll See
Ancient Tofu Crafting Workshop
Visit the He Nai Chuan Tofu Factory (禾乃川國產豆製所) located in a repurposed hospital. Under the guidance of master craftsmen, you will use locally sourced, non-GMO soybeans and natural brine to transform soy milk into silken tofu. The best part? You get to taste the pure, creamy flavor of your creation immediately after it's made.
The Art of "Blue Gold": Natural Indigo Dyeing
Rediscover Sanxia’s historic industry. At a traditional dye house, you will learn the Tie-Dye (Shibori) technique. By binding cotton fabric and immersing it in deep indigo vats, you’ll create a one-of-a-kind pattern. Watch as the fabric emerges green and miraculously turns a vibrant "Sanxia Blue" upon contact with the air.
Sanxia Old Street (Minquan Street)
Step back in time as you walk beneath the continuous arched corridors of Minquan Street. This is one of Taiwan’s best-preserved historic streets, featuring intricate red-brick facades, Baroque carvings, and traditional "mountain wall" gables. Between the heritage shops, you'll find century-old pharmacies, tea houses, and the famous Zushi Temple, known as the "Palace of Oriental Art."

Pro-Tips for Your Visit
What to Wear
Indigo dyeing can be messy! While aprons and gloves are provided, we recommend wearing darker clothing or items you don't mind getting a small blue spot on. For the tofu workshop, comfortable, non-slip shoes are best.
The "Golden Bull Horn"
While wandering Sanxia Old Street, you must try the Golden Bull Horn (Jin Niu Jiao). It’s a buttery, croissant-like pastry that is the signature snack of the district. Your guide will point out the most authentic bakery!
