Do I need a visa to visit China in 2026?

As of 2026, China has expanded its visa-free entry for many nationalities (up to 30 days). Our 10-day Gansu tour fits comfortably inside that window. Please check your specific eligibility; if a standard visa is required, we will provide the necessary invitation documents for your application.

Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts and ends in Lanzhou. On Day 1, your English-speaking guide meets you at Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport (LHW) and transfers you to your hotel. On Day 10, your guide and driver transfer you back to Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport for your departure flight.

Are flights included?

No. International and domestic airfares to and from Lanzhou Airport are not included, so you can book the flights that best suit your schedule.

Does the tour only visit Gansu?

No. Days 1–5 follow the Hexi Corridor through Gansu (Lanzhou, Wuwei, Zhangye, Jiayuguan and Dunhuang). On Day 6 we cross into Qinghai for the Qaidam Basin, Qarhan Salt Lake, Chaka Salt Lake, Qinghai Lake and Xining, before returning to Lanzhou on Day 9.

What is the highest altitude, and how is altitude sickness managed?

The highest points are around Chaka Salt Lake and Qinghai Lake, at approximately 3,100 meters (10,170 feet). The route climbs gradually from Lanzhou (about 1,500m) over several days, giving your body time to acclimatize. Stay well-hydrated, avoid strenuous exercise on Days 7 and 8, and consult your physician about altitude medication such as Acetazolamide before departure.

Will my apps (Google, WhatsApp, Instagram) work in China?

Many international apps are restricted in China. Every guest receives a complimentary high-speed eSIM with an integrated VPN, so you can use Instagram, WhatsApp, Google Maps and more throughout the trip. Please confirm your phone supports eSIM before booking: most iPhones from XS (2018) onwards and most flagship Android phones from 2020+ are compatible. If you’re unsure, send us your phone model and we’ll check it for you.

What accommodation is included?

9 nights in handpicked 4- and 5-star international-standard hotels, based on double occupancy.

Which meals are included?

All daily breakfasts, lunches and dinners as specified in the itinerary, featuring regional specialties such as Dunhuang lamb and hand-pulled noodles. The final evening in Lanzhou includes a send-off dinner with a live noodle-pulling performance.

How do we travel between destinations?

A dedicated, air-conditioned tour coach is used for the entire 10 days, including the long scenic crossing of the Qaidam Basin into Qinghai.

Are entrance fees included?

Yes. Entry to every major scenic area, monastery and World Heritage Site in the itinerary is included, such as the Mogao Caves, Zhangye Danxia, Jiayuguan Fort, Chaka Salt Lake and Kumbum Monastery.

Are there any forced shopping stops?

No. This tour follows a 100% zero forced shopping policy. Every day is dedicated to sightseeing, culture, photography and leisure.

What level of physical fitness is required?

A moderate level of fitness is recommended. You will climb the sand dunes at Mingsha Mountain, walk around large sites such as Jiayuguan Fort and the Mogao Caves, and spend long stretches on the coach on some days. Guests with mobility concerns should let us know in advance.

What should I pack?

Comfortable walking shoes, layers for changing temperatures between the desert and the high plateau, sun protection and a universal travel adapter. China uses 220V electricity with plug types A, C and I.

How do I pay for things in China?

Major hotels accept international credit cards, but many smaller shops, night markets and food stalls only accept mobile payments (Alipay or WeChat Pay) or cash. We recommend setting up Alipay linked to your international card before you depart.

How much does the tour cost?

From $1,520 USD per person in a double room. The single room supplement is $1,800 USD per person.

When are the departure dates?

The next departure is November 11, 2026, with more dates available on the tour page. We are also taking enquiries for 2027 departures.

How do I book, and how do I pay for the tour?

Choose your date and submit the booking form on the tour page — no payment is required at that point. We will reply with your confirmation, payment instructions and detailed itinerary. We accept international bank transfers and PayPal.

Is travel insurance required?

Personal travel insurance is not included, and it is highly recommended for this high-altitude itinerary. Make sure your policy covers medical emergencies and trip delays.
